How familiar are you with probiotics?
The human microbiome?
The ‘human microbiome’ is the name given to colonies of bacteria that line your intestines. It is hugely important to
- the health and function of your immune system,
- your serotonin (the happiness neurotransmitter) production, and,
- the way your body digests and extracts nutrients from food
Bio-active foods contain probiotics, which provide the microbiome with beneficial strains of bacteria, which help to maintain a healthy digestive system. Microbiome-related science is pretty interesting at the moment because we are also learning more and more about how the health of our microbiome directly affects our brain, central nervous system, mood and happiness.
There are an abundance of traditional food practices from all over the world that incorporate fermentation and culturing to increase the bio activity of foods, and one that is easy to replicate at home and super gut-nourishing is sauerkraut.
Sauerkraut is a fermented cabbage dish that is a great accompaniment to breakfast dishes, salads, meat dishes, or on its own. During the fermentation process the cabbage undergoes chemical changes that produce organic acids and beneficial bacteria, which, when we consume it, populates our gut with bacteria that support nutrient absorption, immunity, mental health, and happy hormone activity.
Because ‘food as medicine’ is Eden’s preferred, holistic, road to optimal health, we have been busy preparing home made ‘kraut for our friends and visitors. Pop in and grab some to take home!
